Seeing The Bigger Picture
by Stephen Tweed

In January of 1997, I was sitting in the office of Chip Liversidge, the CEO of Community Health Services in Portland, Maine.  We had just finished a board of directors planning retreat and we were reminiscing about Chip's 30 years as a CEO in home health care.  Chip made a very interesting comment.

He said, "One of my big regrets is that we, as an industry, have not invested enough in developing the next generation of home care leaders."  This one statement led us to more conversation and an industry survey of home health care CEOs.  That one conversation ultimately led to starting this company, Leading Home Care.

Chip and I surveyed over 200 home health care CEOs to identify the top characteristics of highly effective home care leaders.  The results were a vast set of ideas, information, data, and opinions about what makes great leaders in home health care in Amercia.

Clearly, the number one factor identified by those CEOs they called, "Seeing the Bigger Picture."  As we have continued to study that concept over the past 14 years, we are much clearer about what that means.

Home Health Care Leaders who "See the Bigger Picture" are leaders who have:

  • A clear model of strategic thinking.
  • The ability to objectively assess the current reality of their home care business.
  • An understanding of the forces and trends shaping the future of our industry.
  • A clear picture of the business of home care.
  • A clearly defined source of competitive advantage in the marketplace.
  • A keen awareness of the factors that drive the economic engine of home health care.
  • Tools and Techniques for measuring results.

That research and the revelation that the key characteristic of highly effective home care leaders is "Seeing the Bigger Picture" has driven much of what we have done over the past decade at Leading Home Care.  We created the Academy for Home Care Leadership™, and a series of keynote speeches and learning seminars based on those results.  This research, combined with my first book, Strategic Focus: A Gameplan for Developing Competitive Advantage, helped me to refine our Model of Strategic Thinking.

A Model of Strategic Thinking

Every leader in home health care, hospice or private duty home care needs to have a framework or a model for thinking strategically.

"Strategic Thinking is the process of defining the actions you will take in order to fulfill your agency's mission and vision and to create competitive advantage in your marketplace."

Stephen Tweed
Strategic Focus: A Gameplan for Developing Competitive Advantage

Our model of strategic thinking begins with where you are now.  It involves an objective assessment of your current reality.  Then we look toward the future.  Your future is influenced by a series of outside forces and trends.  Forces are those pressures that cause change, and trends are the patterns of change caused by the forces.

Your future is also influenced by your Desired Future:  your Mission, Vision and Values.  While I once put a lot of emphasis on Mission, now I realize that most home care companies have a pretty clear mission.  My new focus is on helping leaders develop a clear Vision for the Future.

Your Future rests on a foundation of Competitive Advantage.  This is a combination of factors that makes your agency unique and that differentiates you from your competitors.  Underlying this foundation is your economic engine.  The fuel for your economic engine is dollars and more dollars come from serving more patients or clients.

Along the bottom of our model, we have a measurement scale.  You've heard me say many times....

"What gets measured gets managed, what gets rewarded gets repeated."

There are three things that move you and your agency from Now to the Future:
1.  Leadership - That's "All y'all."   Y'all are the leaders of your agencies, and the decisions you make and the actions you take have a huge impact on getting to the future.

2.  Focus - "Spray and Pray" no longer works in home health care.  The leaders who are most focused, get the best results and run the most succesful agencies.

3.  Action - It all comes down to what you do to move from Now to the Future.  It's about focused action.

Stephen Tweed's Hot Topics for 2012

One of the ways we help home health care, hospice and private duty home care leaders see the bigger picture is through our keynote speeches and learning seminars.  Each year, I have the opportunity to speak to about 60 home health care and hospice association conferences, corporate meetings and franchise meetings.

This year, we've developed some new programs and we've updated some existing programs to meet the current needs in our industry.  One of the ways I learned about those needs was to conduct telephone interviews with CEOs of home care associations across the country to find out what their members are asking for in the way of conference educational programming.

As a result of this ongoing research, we have updated our speech and seminar offerings to focus on "Seeing The Bigger Picture" and have organized our offerings into four tracks:

I.  The CEO Track - this is a series of presentations and facilitated workshops for CEOs and Owners of Home Health, Hospice and Private Duty Home Care who want to see the bigger picture of what's happening in our industry.

II.  The Leadership Track - this is a series of programs for middle and upper level managers who want to develop their leadership competencies.

III.  Serving More Patients - This is a series of programs based on our industry research in home health care, hospice and private duty sales and marketing.

IV.  Private Pay - This is a series of programs designed to help you grow your private pay, non-medical home care business.

Jason Tweed Live
Most of you know my son, Jason Tweed, the editor of our other newsletter, Private Duty Today.  Many people have asked about having Jason come to speak for their conferences or conventions.  Since Jason is physically disabled and lives in a wheel chair, he doesn't fly anymore.  Jason and I did speak together last year in Philadelphia for the National Private Duty Association's annual convention.

This past summer, Anita Bradberry, the Executive Director of the Texas Association for Home Care & Hospice called and asked if Jason could come to Dallas for their annual convention.  He couldn't travel, but we did make arrangements to bring Jason to their convention LIVE via Skype.

I presented a keynote speech on Navigating the FOG of Health Care Reform.  Then we did a breakout session with Jason speaking on the topic, Successful Home Care from the Consumer's Perspective.  It was a smash hit!  Here is what the workshop particpants said in their feedback to TAHCH:

  • This workshop is one of the best I have attended in 20+ years.
  • To hear Jason's perspective clarified for me how to handle calls to clients and understand, clearly, their side.  Great job!
  • Excellent teaching tool.  Thanks Jason and Stephen
  • Great workshop.  Having Jason as a speaker was terrific.
  • Thanks so much for your care and your son.  God Bless.
  • Very inspired session
  • Been doing this for 10 years.  This is the best, most fabulous session I have ever attended.
  • Excellent information from a different perspective.
  • Jason was incredibly informative
  • I love how Jason was "here".  Awesome.
